Amazing Facts About the Human Body
One of my closest friends, Dr. Wesley, was once examining a patient with a rare disease. Upon careful diagnosis, he discovered some strange happenings, especially related to the organs. He gave me a hurried call and explained the misdoings. It was, as if, an alien lifeform came to Earth! His factual observation was intimidating yet startling for a common man: The patient’s breath exhumed part oxygen and part carbon dioxide!
The human body is a miraculous formation of cells, tissues, bones, and organs, connected with arteries and veins moving throughout the interior. Commoners might not know, but infants, at times, are born with special abilities that assist them in creating historic moments. Michael Phelps, one of the most renowned swimmers, had flippers-like feet (larger feet than other swimmers). Likewise, Miguel Indurain’s lungs could take in approx. two gallons of air (twice than an ordinary person).
Jock Sturges, an American photographer said, “I am fascinated by the human body and all its evolutions.” Changes in the human structure are evident, but the complexity by which it functions is a startling phenomenon.
Let’s learn more about God’s creation!
The Human Body – An Artifact of Sorts
“A Healthy Heart doesn’t need a body to beat as long as it has an oxygenated blood supply, it will keep going, with or without its owner.”
That’s why I love to do open-heart surgeries. Although it seemed life-threatening at first, but I got used to it eventually. My patients were all heart when they recovered from their successful bypass. One of them exclaimed, “Your hands are made to work for heart surgeries. It was a blessing for me to have been managed by you.”
“The Human Brain looks wrinkled because it is actually folded inside the skull in order to fit a maximum of surface, and thus neurons and cell communications. Some animals, like rodents, have a completely smooth brain.”
My friend, Dr. Wesley, once handled a patient with brain tumor. It was, in his own words, a traumatic experience that lives up in his memory to-date. However, the operation was a success, primarily because of the non-malignant nature of the tumor. The patient is a renowned ophthalmologist now!
“You can only swallow two to three times before your body forces you to wait and try again.”
That’s why gluttony is such a menace, sometimes bringing death at the doer’s door. King Adolf of Sweden passed away by over-consuming lobsters, herring, champagne, and 14 servings of hot milk in 1771. According to Christian theology, gourmandizing is one of the seven sins of man. An ordinary human being should swallow digestible morsels for proper health and fitness.
“Your cornea (in the eye) is the only part of your body that doesn’t get oxygen from your lungs. The cornea just absorbs free oxygen from the air the way insects do. This is why contact lenses have to be breathable.”
…… and scratch resistant. Did you know that the cornea protects the entire eye from harmful objects, such as dust, germs, and other particles? Moreover, it is self-healing. One of my friends, Dr. Chris, concluded his research work based on the outer-most part of the eye (cornea). His minor findings for keratoplasty was simply astounding.
“When you’re breathing through your nose, most of the air enters through one nostril. The nostril being used switches every few hours. This is called the nasal cycle.”
A patient once came to me and inquired about the breathing process. I explained the entire process in detail, however, missing this very factor. As he faced difficulty while breathing on the bed, he asked, “why does my nose works two-ways? One nostril goes on while the other turns off?”. Feeling amused by his vocal expressions, I went on to discuss the nasal activity with him.”
“There are no muscles in your fingers. They are powered by muscles in your arms and forearms.”
Although our hands are muscle-free, our fingers’ movements relate to 40 different muscles of our forearm and hands. Hands have sensory receptors to show the degree of hotness and coldness of an object or liquid. Moreover, a person can access the dimensions too, i.e., the thickness, smoothness, and toughness of the material. Did you know? One hand has 28 bones!
“Your forearm is the same length as your foot”
I happened to measure my foot with the forearm, the first time I read this statement. And, it was a perfect match! After days of research, I wrote a 2-page article on it, stating the facts as to how it is possible. My friends, especially, Dr. Wesley, had an hour-long discussion with me on the same topic. He is one of those people who leaves no question unanswered, especially when it comes to the human body.
“Your elbow skin is called the weenus. Also, you can pinch it as hard as you want and it won’t hurt.”
Weenus does remind me of Venus. Jokes apart, elbow skin is a tough, rugged area. Moreover, it has fewer pain receptors than other parts of the body. I came to know about it when, one day, I was playing with my nephew, making him laugh through hand movements over his body. However, when I reached his elbow and tried a bit of pinching, he didn’t respond. It was, as if, he didn’t feel anything. Upon studying about human skin, I understood the point clearly.
